More Tips for Saving Gas on the Road

By: Harry80

Gas prices are hindering the family vacation, but it doesn't have to put a stop to them altogether. You can make your vacation budget stretch just a little farther by following a few guidelines. The more you can do to get your car travel ready the more mileage you will get from each tank.

Start by emptying out the car completely. For every 100 extra pounds that are loaded in the car you get around 1% less efficiency. Get as much of the unneeded items out of the vehicle as you can.

Clean up your car and get an oil change. Wash the windows and fill up all of the different fluids. Be sure that you also check your tires and they are at the recommended pressure for your vehicle.

Fill up your car the day before you are heading out. This will not only let you purchase gas at a familiar location but it will also help you get going much faster the day you start your trip.

Along the way you will want to time your stops at exits with lots of amenities. The interstate signs usually give an indication of what will be available and some GPS units will also offer suggestions. The more gas stations at the location the more likely the competition between them will drive prices just a bit lower.

Take your time and drive the speed limit. Avoid sudden stops and starts. Smart driving can save you more gas than all other tips combined.

Gas prices may be hitting historic highs but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t still be hitting the road. By preparing your vehicle well, by driving smart and by planning your stops along your route you will be able to stretch your vacation budget and afford the road trip experience.
